Am I in danger? Please help I'm clueless here?

There is this sound that has been coming from the pipes in my basement for the past five days and it sounds like some kind of gas is leaking. I felt on and around every inch of the pipes but felt nothing. My room is also in the basement where I sleep and lately I have had trouble breathing which makes me very skeptical as I am in excellent shape compared to most other people. But I only have trouble breathing when I'm in my basement after a while. Maybe I'm just paranoid but is it possible that it's carbon monoxide or some other gas? I honestly don't even know if the pipes the noise is coming from are gas lines or water lines. Any advice would be most helpful.
