So I got an mp3 player for christmas, now I need to get some songs on it.?

I go to all this download sites and they want me to subscribe before I can check out what kind of music they offer. Now I'm of an older generation and I want songs from the seventies along with current christian music and I'm not sure if these type of songs are in these sites. How can I make sure a site has what I want before I subscribe?
