Any myths about a bird-dog or bird - cat ?

there have been "Mothman" sightings in upstate new york before..This mythological creature is often sighted in woods ranging from further south around Texas to Ohio ranging all the way to upstate NY. It is a winged creature that usually is seen right after strange light formations (red and white hued) in the sky above the tree line.
